About the role

Help Deliver a City on the Move

Sheffield is the core city at the heart of the South Yorkshire region, a major employment centre and hub for high-skilled jobs, global inward investment and knowledge-intensive businesses, with our economic reach extending across Yorkshire and over the Pennines into the North West.

It's an exciting time to join Sheffield City Council. Momentum is building across the city, with major investment programmes already underway alongside an ambitious 10 year Growth Plan that sets out Sheffield's vision for economic growth, regeneration and opportunity.

A key part of that vision is "A City on the Move", focused on improving connectivity, supporting sustainable growth and delivering transport infrastructure that enables people, businesses and communities to thrive. Working alongside partners including the South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority (SYMCA), Sheffield is delivering significant investment in transport and infrastructure that will shape the city's future.

As a Senior Technician, you'll play a key role in turning that vision into reality, helping to develop and deliver transport schemes that support active travel, improve public transport, enhance road safety and unlock wider regeneration across the city.

The Role

Joining our Transport Projects Team, you will work within a multidisciplinary team delivering a wide range of highway and transport infrastructure projects across Sheffield.

You will be responsible for the development of concept and preliminary designs for transport schemes, often within constrained urban environments, helping to create practical and innovative solutions that balance engineering, operational and community needs.

Key responsibilities will include:

  • Producing concept and preliminary highway and traffic engineering designs for transport schemes.
  • Preparing technical drawings and consultation plans using AutoCAD and other design software.
  • Supporting the development of active travel, walking, wheeling, cycling, road safety and public transport improvement schemes.
  • Developing and processing Traffic Regulation Orders (TROs).
  • Undertaking site inspections, surveys and technical assessments to support scheme development.
  • Providing technical assurance and design support throughout project delivery.
  • Supporting traffic management initiatives and providing technical advice to internal highways and development management teams.
  • Engaging with residents, stakeholders and elected members through public consultations, meetings and engagement events.
  • Contributing to city wide traffic management, highway classification and directional signage strategies.

This is a fantastic opportunity to work on projects from initial concept through to delivery, gaining exposure to some of the most significant transport investment programmes currently taking place across Sheffield.

About You

We're looking for an experienced technician with a background in transport planning, traffic engineering, highways design or infrastructure delivery.

You will bring:

  • Experience developing transport, highway or traffic engineering schemes.
  • Strong technical design capabilities, including the use of AutoCAD or similar software.
  • Knowledge of current highway design standards, traffic management principles and industry best practice,
  • Experience interpreting technical guidance and applying it to real-world engineering challenges.
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to engage confidently with stakeholders, partners and the public.
  • An HNC/HND in Civil Engineering or a related discipline, or equivalent professional experience.

Experience with traffic management design, TRO processes, active travel schemes or public realm projects would be particularly beneficial.

Why Sheffield?

Unlike many private sector roles, Sheffield City Council offers the opportunity to combine meaningful, city shaping transport work with an excellent work life balance, a highly competitive pension, flexible and hybrid working, and a strong commitment to employee wellbeing and professional development.

You'll also benefit from:

  • The opportunity to contribute to over £100m of transport and infrastructure investment.
  • Flexible and hybrid working arrangements, typically with 2-3 office days per week.
  • A highly competitive Local Government Pension Scheme.
  • Generous annual leave and wellbeing support.
  • Access to technical training, mentoring and long term career development.
  • A supportive and experienced team delivering high profile infrastructure projects across the city.

Join Sheffield's Transport and Infrastructure Revolution

If you're passionate about transport engineering, sustainable infrastructure and improving how people move around cities, this is your chance to help shape the future of Sheffield while building your career on some of the region's most significant transport projects
