Women Leaders Event
February 2018 marks the centenary of the Representation of the People Act 1918 which allowed women over 30 to vote for the first time in this country’s history. In honour of this, Penna hosted a Networking Event to celebrate with Women in Leadership.
Jo Miller, Chief Executive of Doncaster Council and President of SOLACE was the keynote speaker at this session, drawing on her experience and impressive career to date, Jo highlighted that even though the representation of women at CEO level in local government is on the increase, women were still highly under-represented in the leader and member community. In fact, representation has stagnated, with fewer than 1 in 5 council leaders being women.
Jo provided statistics that demonstrated how organisations in the private sector with a more diverse board (female) were more profitable and successful. Surely this is something that can be replicated in local government. She also spoke about the work she is doing as part of her presidency of SOLACE and in light of the Fawcett Report to bring gender diversity to the national agenda.
It was an informative and insightful evening for all the women leaders present and also brings us as an organisation closer to our goal which is to provide a forum/platform where we can continually make progress on the journey to improve diversity in leadership and help organisations more closely represent the communities they serve.
